He will perform at Steve’s Guitars in Carbondale, Thursday May 17th 8:30pm, then appear at Revolution Brewing in Paonia, Friday May 18th at 6pm. He will also offer a series of classes over the weekend.

Musekiwa will be teaching two days of beginner workshops in singing, Mbira and Hosho (shaker). Classes will be held Saturday May 19th and Sunday May 20th, in Hotchkiss. These workshops are sponsored by ‘Zimbabwe in the North Fork,’ a local group dedicated to promoting the traditional music and culture of Zimbabwe.

Musekiwa is touring after the release of his fourth CD, “Muronda Tsimba.” Musekiwa will offer beginning classes to introduce the techniques and styles of his traditional music.

The mbira is a primary traditional instrument of the Zezuru tribes of the Shona people, and has been played for over 1,000 years at religious rituals, royal courts, and social occasions. It consists of 22 to 28 metal keys mounted on a hardwood soundboard and is usually placed inside a large gourd resonator (deze). The keys are played with the two thumbs plucking down and the right forefinger plucking up.

Musekiwa Chingodza was born into a family of great mbira players in Mwangara village, Murewa, in 1970. He began playing mbira at age five, and says about his playing “No one taught me to play mbira. Rather, I learned by listening to other [mbira masters] as they were playing.”

The Hotchkiss workshops are a rare opportunity to learn more about this beautiful & inspiring traditional music from the Shona people of Zimbabwe. All levels welcome, instruments will be provided. Call 970-872-4413 or visit ZimbabweInTheNorthFork.com for more information.

He began playing mbira at the age of five and is self-taught. In 1991, Musekiwa was a key member of the band Panjea, founded by Chris Berry. He composed the hit song Ganda on Panjeas Zimbabwean album. Through listening to other gwenyambira, or great mbira players, he developed a strong attachment to and love for mbira music. He says, “Our music is both medicine and food, as mbira has the power to heal and to provide for people. Mbira pleases both the living and the dead.” Musekiwa is returning for his fourth visit to Western Colorado as part of a semi-annual tour teaching and playing his music.

Chris Berry’s musical journey took flight at age 18, when Berry and his mentor—African drum master Titos Sompa, with whom Berry had been studying since age 13—boarded a plane for Congo’s Brazzaville. After a ten-day boat trip up the Congo River, Berry arrived in a remote village and immersed himself in the culture and music. His fascination of Zimbabwean mbira (thumb piano) music eventually lured him to Harare, where he settled and studied under legendary mbira master Monderek Muchena for ten years. During that time, Berry put together his band Panjea, whose pioneering blend of indigenous music, dance hall, and hip-hop earned platinum album sales throughout Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and beyond. Since that time Chris has been teaching drum, dance & mbira and performing in the United States and abroad.

Musekiwa Chingodza was born into a family of great
mbira players in Mwangara village, Murewa, Zimbabwe,
in 1970. He began playing mbira at the age of five and
is self-taught. Through listening to other gwenyambira,
or great mbira players, he developed a strong attachment
to and love for mbira music. He says, “Our music is both
medicine and food, as mbira has the power to heal and
to provide for people. Mbira pleases both the living and
the dead.” He is an excellent singer, dancer and drummer
and plays both mbira dzavadzimu and nyunga nyunga.
